Jenny and Mingo

The vaccine rollout has had a slow start and many states have been slow to ramp up. I have tried to get signed up in every state that I have been in and most states have been vaccinating their residents first (and rightly so). Finally, I have been scheduled and Asheville, North Carolina was my most generous benefactor. I was almost giddy with excitement when I went in. One dose done, one to go.

Since I was already in town, I did go to the Asheville art museum, which was just ok. I did find though, tucked away in a little corner of Asheville, a Jenny Lind anmitron. Regretfully, she was not animitroning.

Jenny Lind, an opera singer also known as the Swedish Nightingale

It was a lovely drive over to Cherokee NC, which is just on the edge of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. I wanted to see the Museum of the Cherokee. It was a nice museum but I wish they had focused more on the little things – such as how the people lived, their tribal structure, more about their culture. The museum was more concerned with the big picture – Paleo/Woodland/Mississippi eras, Trail of Tears, Civil War.

I like masks

A bonus was that Cherokee is also the home to Mingo Falls. Massive and impressive falls. They had a bridge right over the stream below the falls so you could get up close and personal.

  1. Hi Cyd, I've been enjoying your travels from afar for several years and so enjoy your enthusiasm, curiosity, appreciation of nature, sense of adventure, determination, etc. I actually could go on and on, but those are the things that keep me anticipating yet another of your adventures. I decided to comment on this occasion because you mentioned you were disappointed not to find more information on the Cherokee history and culture at Mingo Falls. It seems that you need to visit the town of Cherokee in order to see that. Their's is an interesting history, and their tribe now owns the Harrah's Casino in Cherokee. Much like the Ojibway Tribe owning the Mystic Casino in Prior Lake.

I'll send you two links with more specific history and culture. I was interested because growing up, our neighbors from across the street, were named Mingo, were native, and had a total of 21 kids. They butchered deer in their kitchen and kept pheasant in their basement, which they butchered as needed. An interesting family, but as a child, I never asked them any questions about their personal history. I'm sure it would have been a fascinating lesson. Here are some links, but they don't go into a lot of detail. https://cherokeeroots.com/history-cherokees/ This second link is like a chamber of commerce link, but you can see what you missed. https://m.visitcherokeenc.com/cherokee-culture/

Keep on truckin', I'll keeping an eye on you, and enjoying your very excellent adventures. Ce

    1. Thanks so much for the nice words. The make me feel good. Interesting about the Mingos in hindsight, just think how mulch you could have learned from them. You know what they say...Childhood is wasted on children. 😊

  2. I have given you some misinformation above. The Casino in Prior lake is owned by the Sioux. The Objibwe own the Grand Casino in Hinckley.
