Bam, Bam, Bamberg

Bamberg, a town in Bavaria, is another town cited as one of Germany's most beautiful towns. In Bamberg's case and based on my rather limited knowledge of most of Germany's towns, I would say that Bamberg does live up to it's reputation. It doesn't hurt that the old town of Bamberg has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993. Bamberg is known for it's medieval streets and buildings.

Germany, as we all know, is known for it's beer. Bamberg, itself,  is known for it's smoked beer. Smoked beer has a distinctive smoke flavor made using malted barley that has been dried over an open flame. Evidently, back in the olden days, breweries were always built next to bakeries. The smoke from the bakery ovens were used in the beer brewing process. We were all given bottles of beer, but as I am not a beer drinker, they all went to Brother Mike. He tells me that they were interesting but not quite in his wheelhouse.

Narrow streets and half timbered houses

Bamberg Cathedral

"First monumental equestrian statue since classical antiquity,
and also one of the first to depict a horse shoe"

The Fuersten Gate at the Cathedral
The statues on each side symbolize Christianity and Judaism.  "The statue on the right is characterized by a blindfold over the eyes symbolizing the blindness of the synagogues...Also her wand is broken meaning that the synagogue has no worldly power anymore.  The wand on the other statue is intact and there is no blindfold meaning that Christianity has eyesight as well as power. Not sure what this part of the Fuersten Gate symbolizes
but looks like everybody is having a good time.

This is right behind the Cathedral.  People lived in the upper levels.
Nowadays, the courtyard is used for festivals and concerts.

Rose Garden at the New Residence.
There are around 4700 roses in over 70 beds. It was completed in 1757.
The funny thing is the building behind the garden. There are no windows,
they are just painted to look like windows.

Looking over the town of Bamberg

The Old Town Hall
The Bishop of Bamberg did not grant the citizens any land for the construction of a town hall.
So, they created an artificial island and built their town hall.
This part of the town hall faces south and west and there is no air conditioning.
They say that in the summer, the office temperatures get up over 100F.

Another canal

My brother was feeling under the weather but I still wanted to have dinner with him.
